Exporting & Importing Conversations

Download your conversations as JSON for backup or migration and restore them anytime, even from other platforms.

Written by Daniel

Overview

BlackMountain lets you export all your conversations, folders, and messages as a JSON file. You can store this file as a backup, transfer it to another device, or switch platforms without losing your chat history.

You can also import JSON-formatted chat exports from other platforms (such as ChatGPT, Claude, or similar tools) into BlackMountain, making it easy to consolidate your AI conversations in one place.

Your chat data belongs to you. Export it anytime, store it securely, and import it.

Exporting Your Conversations

You can download all your BlackMountain chat data as a single JSON file. This export includes your chat threads, messages, folders, labels, and settings.

What Gets Exported

When you export your chats, the following data is included:

  • Chat threads: All conversations you've created

  • Messages: The complete message history within each thread

  • Folders: Your folder structure and organization

  • Labels: Any labels you've applied to chats

  • Settings: Chat-specific configuration and preferences

Attachment files are not included: Exports include all chat threads, messages, folders, labels, and settings. However, attachment files (images, documents) are not included in exports; only their metadata is preserved.

How to Export Your Chats

  1. Navigate to Settings from the profile menu

  2. Go to Chats in the sidebar

  3. Scroll to the Export Chats section

  4. Review the export summary (number of folders, threads, and messages)

  5. Click Download Export

  6. Save the JSON file to a secure location (e.g., encrypted cloud storage or local backup)

Importing Conversations

You can restore your chats from a previously exported JSON file or import chat data from other platforms if it's in JSON format.

How Import Works

When you import a JSON file:

  • If you have no existing chats, the import creates new conversations from the file

  • If you already have chats, the imported data is merged with your existing conversations (not replaced)

  • Folder structures, labels, and settings are restored automatically

How to Import Chats

  1. Navigate to Settings > Chats

  2. Scroll to the Import Chats section

  3. Drag and drop your JSON file into the upload zone, or click browse to select it

  4. Wait for the file to upload and process

  5. Click Restore from Backup to confirm the import

  6. Your chats, folders, and labels will appear in the sidebar

Importing from Other Platforms

BlackMountain supports importing chat data from other AI platforms, such as ChatGPT, Claude, or similar tools, as long as the data is available in JSON format.

How It Works

If you have chat exports from another platform:

  1. Export your conversations from the other platform (check their documentation for export options)

  2. Ensure the export is in JSON format

  3. Import the file into BlackMountain using the steps above

  4. Your conversations will be integrated into your existing chat structure

Cross-platform migration: Moving from another AI tool? Import your JSON exports to bring your conversation history with you. No need to start from scratch.

Compatibility Notes

Not all platforms structure their JSON exports the same way. In most cases, BlackMountain will automatically parse and import the data. However:

  • Some platform-specific metadata may not be preserved

  • Attachments (images, files) are not included in most exports; only references to them

  • If an import fails, check that the file is valid JSON and contact support if needed

Best Practices

Regular Backups

Export your chats regularly to keep a secure backup:

  • Schedule quarterly exports (depending on how actively you use the platform)

  • Store JSON files in a secure location (e.g., encrypted cloud storage, password-protected folders)

  • Label backups with dates (e.g., blackmountain-backup-2025-01.json) for easy identification

Before Switching Platforms

If you're migrating to or from BlackMountain:

  • Export your data from the old platform before closing your account

  • Verify that the JSON file is complete and readable

  • Import it into BlackMountain and confirm that all conversations appear correctly

Secure Storage

Your chat history may contain sensitive information:

  • Store JSON files in encrypted storage (e.g., password-protected cloud services)

  • Avoid sharing export files via unencrypted email or public links

  • Delete old backups securely if they're no longer needed

Troubleshooting

Import failed or file not recognized

  • Check the file format: Only .json files are accepted. If you have a .txt, .csv, or other format, you'll need to convert it

  • Verify the JSON structure: Open the file in a text editor and ensure it's valid JSON (no syntax errors)

  • Contact support: If the file looks correct but still won't import, reach out to our team at [email protected]

Missing attachments after import

  • Attachments are not included in exports: Only metadata (file names, references) is preserved

  • You'll need to re-upload any files manually if they're needed in future conversations

Duplicate conversations after import

  • Imports are additive: If you import the same file twice, you may see duplicate chats

  • Check your folder structure and archive or delete duplicates manually if needed

Import from another platform doesn't work

  • JSON structure may differ: Not all platforms structure their exports the same way

  • Contact our support team with a sample file (remove sensitive data first) so we can help troubleshoot

Next Steps

Now that you know how to export and import your conversations:

  • Set up a backup routine: Export your chats regularly to avoid data loss

  • Migrate from other platforms: Bring your conversation history from ChatGPT, Claude, or other tools

  • Organize your chats: Learn how to use Folders & Labels to keep your workspace tidy
